Root Canals in Fort Lauderdale

Man experiencing tooth pain

A painful mouth often leads patients to search for a “root canal near me.” At Pearl White Dentisty, we’re not surprised at how many Google searches this produces! A root canal, also known as endodontic treatment, rescues severely decayed or injured teeth from extraction. While root canals are often associated with severe pain, you are unlikely to feel any discomfort during the procedure, thanks to modern anesthesia and sedation. In fact, the pain derived from the affected tooth is the worst part of the process. Plus, needing a root canal in Fort Laurderdale can actually be good news — it means we can save your natural tooth!

Millions of teeth are saved every year due to root canal therapy, when otherwise, if left untreated, an abscess may develop or the teeth would need to be removed. Fort Lauderdale dentist Dr. Natalia Benda-Celenski has over 15 years of experience successfully performing root canal treatments and will ensure your experience is as comfortable, quick and painless as possible.

REASONS FOR NEEDING A ROOT CANAL

If you need a root canal, it’s because tooth decay or injury has reached beyond the tooth’s exterior layer of enamel to affect the interior of your tooth, or the area known as the pulp/nerve. Most commonly, those in need of a root canal may experience severe pain that may either be continuous or limited to moments when the victim chews with the affected tooth or the tooth comes in contact with hot or cold liquids. There are numerous reasons that patients are advised to seek root canal therapy. While every situation is unique, some of the most common factors that can lead to a root canal include:

What Happens During a Root Canal PROCEDURE?

Root canals are some of the most commonly performed restorative dentistry procedures. If you need a root canal, it’s because tooth decay or injury has reached beyond the tooth’s exterior layer of enamel to affect the interior of your tooth, or the area known as the pulp/nerve. Dr. Natalia will build a treatment plan based on the severity and location of the infection. Then, your root canal in Fort Lauderdale is carried out over the course of one to two visits to our office. Root canals may be combined with antibiotic therapy to fully heal the infection.

Steps of a root canal include:

  1. Anesthesia and sedation are administered as desired
  2. The interior of the tooth is accessed by drilling a small hole through the tooth
  3. All infected tissue is removed
  4. The root canal is measured and reshaped
  5. Gutta percha (a naturally occurring substance derived from Malaysian trees) fills the tooth
  6. A permanent, temporarycrown, or filling is  placed
  7. If needed (or not already performed), permanent restoration is placed in a follow-up appointment

If you need to wear a temporary crown or filling between appointments, we highly advise caution when eating. Try to chew on the side of your mouth opposite to the root canal and avoid sticky or chewy foods completely.

Why Get a Root Canal?

Root canals are generally recommended to address significant and invasive tooth decay. These are situations in which the decay has moved beyond the exterior enamel of a tooth to the interior pulp. If untreated, the infected pulp will cause the tooth to continue to decay and cause infection in the bone surrounding your tooth. It is also likely to cause increased pain and discomfort.

In other words, the purpose of a root canal is to save your tooth. The longer you wait to get the procedure done, the more likely it is that the tooth will fail and no longer be a candidate for treatment.

Dr. Natalia and the Pearl White team will explain specifically why you need a root canal. We will also describe the procedure and how we can help you save your tooth and restore your smile.

What Can I Expect During a Root Canal in Fort Lauderdale?

Dr. Natalia performs root canals and a wide range of other procedures from the comfort of Pearl White’s Fort Lauderdale office.

If you are experiencing tooth or jaw pain, we are happy to see you as soon as possible. Routine checkups and cleanings are an essential part of oral care that helps us identify potential problems and address them proactively. We often use x-rays to better understand what is going on inside your mouth and determine whether an infection has reached the pulp.

The root canal procedure typically takes about 90 minutes. In some cases, we may need to clear up any remaining infection before the tooth is permanently sealed. Dr. Natalia will insert a temporary seal and use medication to help eliminate the infection. In these situations, we will schedule a second appointment for you to return to have the tooth permanently sealed.

You may find it more comfortable to chew on the opposite side of your mouth or eat softer foods in the first few days following a root canal. You should continue to brush and floss your teeth as usual.

If you are generally uncomfortable about visiting a dentist or feeling nervous about getting a root canal, this is quite common. At Pearl White, we take several steps to ensure our patients’ comfort each and every time they visit our office.

That includes using anesthesia to prevent pain during a root canal and offering sedation to keep patients calm and comfortable throughout the procedure. After the procedure, you can also use over-the-counter pain medications to alleviate any lingering soreness.

Here is the truth: It is more painful to live with an infected tooth than to have a root canal. The infection itself is the source of the pain. A root canal eliminates the infection.

How Can I Get a Root Canal Near Me?

Root canals can be performed by dentists or endodontists, dental professionals who specialize in the study of dental pulp. The costs associated with the procedure typically range from $800 to $1500.

The good news for Pearl White patients is that Dr. Natalia and her team have been regularly helping patients save their teeth through root canals in Fort Lauderdale and other procedures for nearly two decades.
