A general checkup is one of the most important things you can do to maintain your dental health and keep plaque, gum disease and other dental issues at bay. It is recommended that individuals – both adults and children alike – have routine dental exams twice a year, preferably every six months. However, depending on the particular individual’s current oral health, the time between checkups can vary. If you have a history of good oral health, you may only need to visit the dentist once a year for a checkup, while those with pre-existing conditions may be advised to undergo dental exams more frequently.
Anyone who is at risk of cavities, gum disease, or who suffers from recurring dental problems should consider visiting the dentist more than twice a year. With more frequent checkups, we can monitor the progress of your oral health and perform additional treatments to improve any underlying conditions. If any of the below apply to you, it would be in your best interest to schedule a general checkup every three or four months:
Routine checkups are quick and painless. During the oral exam, Dr. Natalia will check your teeth for any signs of cavities and measure the space between your teeth and gums, called pockets. She will also assess your overall dental hygiene and check for any signs of tooth decay, teeth crowding, or grinding and recommend treatment. Additionally, Dr. Natalia will ask you if you are currently suffering from any oral issues and diagnose existing problems, such as receding gums or tartar buildup. We may also take x-rays during this time to look at your teeth from a deeper perspective. We understand that visiting the dentist can be nerve-racking, so we make it our mission to ensure you feel at ease and comfortable throughout the entire checkup.
Dental cleanings and checkups go hand-in-hand and are typically performed within the same visit. There are two types of dental cleanings we perform at our Fort Lauderdale office: routine cleanings and deep cleanings (also known as a scaling and root planing). Both types of cleanings are administered by our dental hygienists and may require mild anesthesia if a deeper cleaning is required.
During a routine cleaning, the hygienist will use a scaler (a small metal instrument) to remove tartar buildup above and below the gum line, floss your teeth, and clean them using an ultrasonic brush. Afterward, a fluoride treatment may be administered.
If you have larger pockets between your teeth and gums, the hygienist may perform a scaling and root planing treatment. This type of treatment involves the same steps as a routine cleaning, but also cleans below the gum line to help shrink pocket size and address plaque buildup, inflammation or infection. Local anesthesia is often used with deep cleanings to prevent discomfort and an antibiotic may also be administered to fight infection.
